That time has come again

We will be having a meeting to discuss the layout of the new issue of the journal tomorrow night at 6:00, KSN room of the Memorial Union. All of the reading is done and we will begin sending out notices shortly. We’ll keep you posted, and hopefully we can get the issue out in record time this year!

Spooky Stories this Thursday

We hope you’ll come to the meeting this Thursday and bring an original spooky story, poem or play to workshop before we head over to ƩƬΔ Tales from the Bonfire where we’ll share them! The following are just a few prompts to get your creativity flowing, but please don’t feel limited to these prompts by any means! Do you have any good prompts to share? Feel free to leave them in the comments.

  • As your grandfather lies on his deathbed, he confesses a terrible crime he committed and got away with many years ago. He tells you that his freedom was the result of a deal he made, and that you should expect a visit soon. Someone has to hold up his end of the bargain…
  • A first time author who considers himself a creative writer becomes worried when he can’t come up with a good idea for his second book. In an act of desperation he takes out a very old book that his grandmother brought back from the homeland and turns to a dog-eared page…
  • A woman is overcome with the need to dig a hole in a particular spot of her lawn. After digging non-stop, until her hands are raw, nearly 30 feet down, she finds something – a doorknob and a door…
  • A child will go to any lengths to win this year’s science fair…
  • A businessman, late for a meeting, gets in an elevator that takes him to the basement against his will. The doors open, the elevator shuts down. He steps out and the first thing he sees is a massive aquarium containing a giant creature …
  • A man is working the graveyard shift when ______________ comes on the radio. The clock strikes 2 A.M. just as the song lyrics __________ play. The lights go out, yet the radio continues playing….

Journal Launch

The latest issue of the journal is out! We’ll be placing copies around campus, so be sure to keep your eye out. You can also visit the EMLJ desk in PH and ask for a copy if you’d like.

We’ll be holding the launch party on September 20th at 7:00 pm in the Memorial Union Greek Room. We hope to see you there.

We’re very excited and proud to bring you this latest edition of Quivira and we hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed putting it together!

Don’t forget that you can start submitting your work now. Send in as much as you want, as much as you can. E-mail your submissions to quivira@emporia.edu. See our Submissions Guidelines page for more info on submitting.

See you at the launch party!

If your piece(s) was not accepted don’t lose heart! We got so many great submissions there was just no way we could publish them all. Keep writing, drawing, painting and expressing your self.

We’ll be creating two issues of the journal this year as we switch to a spring publication, and we need your submissions! Let me stress again, we need your submissions! Keep submitting! Submit as much as you want. You don’t have to limit yourself to one, two, or three. Send twelve if you’ve got them! As you may have noticed by the over-abundance of exclamation points we’re pretty excited about this upcoming issue and we want you to be too!

E-mails

We will be sending out e-mails today to let those who submitted know our decisions. Keep an eye on your inbox to find out if your submissions were accepted or not.

Almost there!

We’ve finished going through submissions for the Fall 2012 edition, and will be working on the layout of the journal on Tuesday and Wednesday at noon in PH 406. However, we are still accepting submissions for the next edition so don’t stop writing! We’ll be releasing two journals this year as we transition to a Spring publication for the journal, so we still need submissions! If you submitted for this edition keep an eye on your e-mail…

Reading Submissions

We have begun the reading process and are actually almost done with all of the submission. However, we didn’t receive as many art submissions as we would like, so we would like to extend the window out a few days for all of you artists to submit your works. Remember that all art and photos will be printed in black and white so choose the pieces you feel would translate well. E-mail your submissions to nbarb@emporia.edu or quivira_esu@yahoo.com. Keep an eye on you e-mail inbox. We’ll let you know which pieces were chosen for publication.

Come read with us

We will start reading today! You can come join us today and tomorrow in PH 406 from 11 to 4. We have a lot of submissions so feel free to drop in to help!

Congrats!

A big congratulations go our to our new 2012 ESU graduates!

Between finals and graduation these past couple weeks have been very hectic and so we are still in the process of coding and blinding each piece to begin the reading process. What does that mean exactly?

We give each submission a code, and then remove the name and information from it. After deciding on a piece we can then look up the applicant that it belongs to using the code, and let them know whether or not it’s been approved. This ensures that no one is showed favoritism or bias, and each submission is approved or rejected on its own merits.

We’ll keep you posted on when we expect to start reading the pieces. Hopefully it will be quite soon!

Enjoy your summer, and keep an eye out for updates!
